TORONTO, ON, September 5th, 2019 – HONK, North America’s leading provider of mobile payments for the parking industry announced today it has rolled out an app-free solution to pay for parking at 11 colleges and universities across Canada, just in time for the busy back to school season. This patent pending technology (HonkTAP) makes it easier and much more convenient for students, faculty and visitors to pay for on-campus parking. Once parked, drivers simply tap their iPhone or Android on the NFC-enabled signage posted throughout campus and walk away, knowing that their parking has been paid.

HonkTAP is the first product on the market to allow drivers to bypass the usual app download and subsequent user registration for mobile payment, making the process of paying for campus parking fast, safe and frictionless. By simply tapping a phone, drivers are directed to a guest checkout page where they input their license plate and select the amount of parking time desired. HonkTAP accepts Apple Pay, PayPal and all major credit cards.

The payment method has all the functionality of an app without the download. Drivers can opt-in to receive text notifications when their parking is set to expire, and can add time remotely from their phone. Purchase history, changing vehicles and many other features can be accessed by signing up for a free HONK account. Older phones that do not accommodate NFC get the same great experience from scanning a QR code from their phone’s camera.

“Postsecondary schools are constantly evolving to offer their students the best-in-class experience in all areas of student life – HonkTAP is an easy win for the parking component,” said Michael Back, HONK Founder and CEO. “Our goal is to make parking as frictionless and easy as possible, and we’re confident HonkTAP delivers on this.”

“We recently introduced HonkTAP at a very large park and ride event on campus,” said Randa Kachkar, Associate Director of Parking Services, University of Alberta. “Each year we bring in extra pay stations to meet demand for this event but HonkTAP reduced those lines significantly from previous years and the extra pay stations are no longer necessary! Folks were able to pay and be on their way within seconds. The U of A parking team is now in the process of putting HonkTAP all over campus with the intent of eliminating pay stations in some areas altogether. This will save us money and time but more importantly, it will make paying for parking on our campus more efficient.”
